"Franco ha muerto” (Franco is dead in english) were the three words that flooded every Spanish newsstand on November 20, 1975, although the news had already been officially announced in the rest of Europe the day before. Photographer Colita quickly left Barcelona for Madrid to capture the excitement of a country torn between mourning and celebration. Blending in with the crowd, she managed to document the pulse of the streets; from the lines to see the deceased to the proclamation of the king and Franco's funeral, a historic milestone that brought an end to four decades of dictatorship in Spain.
